Onbegrensd
PosterContinuo, the UGent Alumni and Personnel Orchestra, has opted for a musical adventurous course. With “Onbegrensd”, the orchestra briefly omits European musical traditions and explores the broad musical spectrum beyond. The repertoire includes the African-American composer Florence Price, who elegantly interweaves classical music with blues, and the Syrian composer Shalan Alhamwy, who echoes images from Aleppo in his music. In addition, the orchestra unites its forces with the Taiwanese soprano Chia-Fen Wu, Fem Devos (piano), Iranian soloist Ehsan Yadollahi (tar) and Paul Klinck (violin), all conducted by Kevin Hendrickx.

Remember Biennale Interieur
IdentityWhile browsing trough the archive, the posters and catalogues designed for the Biennale Interieur by Boudewijn Delaere attracted a lot of attention. Ever since the beginning of the Biennale, his identity is confronted with contemporary design. The cheerful bold colours, the applied shapes, his minimalistic approach, the way the logo is part of the design, the prominent typography, … are particularly interesting components that are closely related to the vision of Studio Studio as a graphic design bureau.
This was the trigger to take this identity as starting point for a further investigation. It was during this research, that Studio Studio saw that other leading graphic designer have (further) experimented with the work of Boudewijn Delaere. With a similar logic, Studio Studio distilled simple forms and colors from the overall graphic identity.
In addition, a clear trend emerged when reviewing the most recent catalogs: the enormous possibilities for personalization or the making of your own interior (objects). Everyone can create a unique design based on established values and their differentiations.
Both these elements were combined in a playful manner in the graphic game ‘Remember Biennale Interieur’. The symbiosis between the distilled forms and colours were translated into cards for the game. First, you can play a memory game to discover and recognize the evolution of the graphic identity fo Biennale Interieur. The game then challenges the players to design their own Biennale poster with their won pairs. This not only stimulates the memory, but also triggers creativity and design with the players!

One of A Type
TypographyCiao Ciao Studio organised a typography exhibition, calling international designers to join a month-long pop-up event during the festival of Palermo Italian Capital of Culture 2018.
Studio Studio was asked to design a single letter of the alphabet based on our own vision of the city of Palermo. The letter H is carefully constructed to reflect the sophistication of Palermo’s architecture and impression. To emphasize this historical context, the proportions of established, familiar fonts were retained in the design of the letter. A striking feature of the letter is the arch used as a crossbar. This element was taken directly from the (pointed) arch forms found in various historically important buildings. The serifs are unusually built up, although they provide a balanced typeface; they unobtrusively represent Palermo’s own eclecticism.
The sum of all the letters designed by the designers creates a dissonant alphabet, showed at the exhibition.

Cult.
Printed matterTo celebrate the 50th anniversary of the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, we designed a cover for the culture section of the newspaper De Morgen. We took a quote from the film and used a self-made font ‘Dave’ to create a typographic composition. Dave is based on the grid-like appearance of (the brain centre of) the computer HAL-9000. We also integrated the visual language and interfaces used by Stanley Kubrick in the fine details on the cover.

Fount Magazine #02
Poster — Printed matterFount Magazine’s ‘The mash-up’ category is an artist-exchange platform. In the 1st round artists from all over the world provided works of art, inspired by the theme ‘Connect’.
Then followed the 2nd round in which Studio Studio had the opportunity to be creative with a piece of art by Nikolai Dobreff. He invited us to connect the old fashioned way, by writing with pen and paper.
We got inspired by words he wrote and designed a poster based on his letters.
First we mashed up his question and freely distilled his message. In a second stade we got inspired by the meaning of the words and decided to add graphic elements.
