Toegepast is an annual design competition run by Cultuurplatform Design in collaboration with Z33, the House for Contemporary Art in Hasselt, in which a group of recently graduated designers is selected to develop a year-long project of their own under mentorship. The twentieth edition, Toegepast 20: Looking for the in-between, presented the work of six selected design talents. Studio Studio designed the scenography and the graphic identity for the exhibition, in collaboration with furniture designer Adriaan Tas.
The exhibition was structured as much around the process of the six designers as around the finished work, so the design of the space was treated as an archive rather than as a display. Each project was broken down into three stages, input, process and output, and each stage was marked with its own symbol within a custom-built indexing system that ran across the scenography, the printed matter and the publication. Visitors could follow a single designer through the three stages or read across the six projects by stage, tracing input to input, process to process, output to output.
