To mark the fiftieth anniversary of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, Studio Studio designed the cover of Cult, the culture supplement of the Belgian newspaper De Morgen. The cover is built around a single line of dialogue from the film, set in HAL9000, a typeface drawn in-house and modelled on the grid-based interface graphics of the HAL 9000 computer that runs the spacecraft in the film. The typographic composition extends the same logic into the smaller details of the cover, so that the page reads as an extension of the film’s own visual system.

We later extended HAL9000 into a browser-based composition tool — typed text and live webcam input rendered as block grids on a configurable canvas, with cell-by-cell letter editing and SVG, PNG, GIF and MP4 export.
