Studio Studio was invited to pay homage to Biennale Interieur, the Belgian design biennial held in Kortrijk, and was given access to its extensive archive of printed material. Inside the archive, the posters and catalogues designed over many editions by Boudewijn Delaere formed the starting point. Delaere’s visual language for the Biennale shifted with the contemporary design culture around it: bold colours, applied shapes, a minimal approach, an integrated logo, prominent typography. The project began as an investigation into how that identity had been built up over time, and into the ways other graphic designers had subsequently reworked its elements.
A small set of recurring forms and colours was extracted from the broader graphic identity. In parallel, the more recent catalogues of the Biennale pointed to a thematic line in the fair itself: an increasing emphasis on personalisation and on the composition of individual interiors. Those two tracks meet in Remember Biennale Interieur, a graphic card game built from the extracted forms. The cards carry the shapes and colours used across the editions, with a reference to the flags that have appeared in the Biennale’s announcement campaigns. Players first move through a memory game in which they recognise and pair the elements of the evolving identity, and then use their matched pairs to compose a Biennale poster of their own.
